The Beginning — Burn Card #1 — Ruben Sierra #261

Ok — This is the BurnCardBurn Project kick off. I’m totally excited to be launching this project. In a nutshell, I will be burning 1987 Topps Baseball cards every week to reduce the number of cards in circulation — read more here.

First up, was one of my childhood favorites: Ruben Sierra card #261. Ruben was a rookie in 1986 so the 1987 Topps card is his rookie card. Ruben could hit for power from both sides of the plate and had great years with the Rangers, finishing second in 1989 MVP voting. I’m not sure whatever happened to him. Anyway, Ruben, you are now immortilized as the #1 card to be burned in the BurnCardBurn project.

    That is HILARIOUS!

came across your auction in my search and got a good laugh out of it.. I too have burned many late 80’s to early 90’s cards and although it seems wrong to some I see it as population control. No matter how much you or I use to keep warm there will still be a ton of it out there. I think you need to expand it to any product up to 1993 and help out a larger group of collectors. Here’s to your blog taking off and don’t forget to add videos of your burns and regular updates!

Yeah, thanks for the support Paul. I may expand out to more years — there was definitely some mass production going on during the late 80s and 90s. For now I’ll have fun burning as many 1987 Topps cards as I can get my hands on.

I’ll be posting once a week so would love to have you check back once in a while and let me know what you think.
